Our Story
Strata Performance is owned and run by Sam Yarwood. Sam has a PhD in biochemistry and cell biology, and he fuses his fundamental understanding of biological processes that he learned during his time as a research scientist to an in depth knowledge of sport, movement and training.
A life-long all-round sports nut, Sam grew up in the Lake District and was a county- and university-level badminton player and coach, before his sporting interests settled on physical challenges in the outdoors. He has been climbing for nearly 20 years, snowboarding for longer, and riding bikes all his life, having road raced and time trialled in the UK, and achieved Elite and Gold times in mass participation events such as The Fred Whitton Challenge and La Marmotte Grand Fondo.
After a few years working in academic research, Sam worked for 10 years in science and health communications, before rehab from a number of injuries piqued his interest in how strength training can form the absolute foundation for long-term athletic performance, injury resistance, recovery and health, both physical and mental.
Sam gave up the day job in 2019 and established Strata Performance to help like-minded souls build the strength and robustness needed to be athletic in the outdoors year after year. His previous experience training for various sports while working in busy, time-poor, stressful non-sporting jobs gives him a unique understanding into how to fit effective training into the demands of hectic modern life.
Sam is a Level 4 Strength and Conditioning coach, a British Weightlifting Level 1 coach, a UKSCA associate member and a Level 3 Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer.
